Viagra - The Hard Truth
Posted: Sunday, April 22, 2007

Viagra

Viagra hit the marketplace with a ton of hype, and subsequently, a ton of curiosity. And with curiosity comes experimentation. “Can a little pill turn me a sexual dynamo?” wondered many men. Today, Viagra has a disturbingly high degree of recreational usage.

I have many concerns with this type of behavior:

1) Viagra is a drug, and drugs have side effects. One of the most frightening is a priaprism (an erection that lasts for more than four hours). Such an occurrence can result in permanent erectile dysfunction – and for some the inability to ever have an erection again.

2) I also fear that those who experiment with Viagra are likely to experiment with other drugs as well. If Viagra is taken at the same time as a nitrate derivative (such as Poppers), the results can be fatal.

3) Weak erections are sometime the side effect of an underlying medical condition such as hypertension or diabetes. When young men self-diagnose and use Viagra without a doctor’s consent they may be cloaking a more serious issue. If you have consistent trouble maintaining an erection, contact your doctor.

4) A typical “youthful” lifestyle is conducive to erectile dysfunction. A night of excessive drinking and smoking makes it very hard for a man to sustain a powerful erection. Again, Viagra can be used to mask a greater problem.

5) Whether a man is 15 or 60, Viagra will enhance the quality of one’s erection. Yet younger men may develop an emotional dependency to the drug. If a young man believes that he needs the drug to please a woman, this can lead to a lifelong dependency.

The Bottom Line: If you are a healthy man who can maintain an erection and engage in sexual behavior, do not jeopardize a lifetime of potentially great sex for the sake of curiosity.

Live Well
