Travel Tips - Planning a Cheap Cruise
Posted: Monday, October 02, 2006

Although geared toward student vacations, STA Travel doesn’t handle cruises. However, students can use STA to plan the individual components of their vacation, including airfare and hotel accommodations.

For those who have a little more vacation time to spare, Norwegian Cruises is the only line with departures from New York. Of course, geography could extend the cruise up to eleven days. Norwegian is currently offering limited-time specials starting as low as $649. Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer cheaper and shorter cruises departing from Florida, and their inclusion of airfare in the price generally provides a better value than Norwegian.

Currency exchange will not be an issue for most cruises, including the Bahamian or Caribbean lines. However, any stops in Mexico might require a dollars-for-pesos exchange ($100 is roughly equal to 1,095 pesos). Students looking for a Hawaiian cruise will have to use Norwegian or Princess, who offer trips in January from Honolulu or California. The shortest Hawaiian options are seven-night cruises starting at $799.

The majority of January cruise deals have not yet materialized, so plan ahead of time.
