Dear Doc,My roommates and I are always arguing over the repercussions of being a pothead. They tend to think that pot is not detrimental to their health, it has no adverse effects on their job performance, and that it is completely non-addictive. I find this all hard to believe, please advise. -Jim
Jim,First things first, marijuana is an illegal substance. That being said, let’s talk about the effects that “pot” can have on the human body and mind.
Marijuana is not often dramatized as a dangerous drug, so it can fly under the radar pretty easily. If nothing else, marijuana is a pollutant that users accept into their body. But beyond that, usage can lead to diminished motivation as well as poor sexual performance.
My major concern with marijuana however is when the drug shapes and controls the lives of its users. Most avid smokers will be quick to tell you that pot is non-addictive – but the drug does in fact control the user’s behavior.
An individual that comes home from work only to plant his/herself on the couch and light up is not exercising, dating, and engaging in social interactions. In this instance, the drug is dangerous and damaging. There is no good that can come of it.
My advice – stay away.
