Dear Doc,
What are the five most common health issues that a guy in his twenties should be on the lookout for?
That`s a great question. A man in his twenties should be most concerned about the following five things:
Your Weight – If you are twenty pounds overweight, you`re sitting on a potential problem. What will your weight condition be in your thirties? Your forties? This sort of problem often gets worse with time and can multiply into a bevy of health issues - from heart attack to diabetes to sexual issues.
Now, one might ask, “By what standard do I measure my weight?” A good place to start is with
BMI (Body Mass Index). There are also many
scales that can measure your body fat percentage – anything over 20% should be cause for concern.
Your Vices – Don`t smoke. There is absolutely no reason to smoke; the health ramifications are serious and
documented. Drink in moderation. If you find yourself having more than three drinks per day, you are certainly at risk for health problems down the road.
Your Sleeping Habits – If you are having trouble falling asleep and or staying asleep, there is likely an underlying issue of coping,
stress management, or a mood issue that needs to be addressed. Don`t ignore this. Continually disrupted sleep can result in disorders from cognitive dysfunction to
erectile dysfunction.
Your Testicles – This
common cancer in men can be overcome if diagnosed early on. Check yourself regularly, and consult a doctor if you
notice a lump in the testicle.
Your Family History - Knowledge is power. Finding out
your family`s health history is a crucial step in determining risk. Pay attention to your findings – they might ultimately require an adjustment in diet or lifestyle.
