Life changes radically for a guy when he reaches turns 25. No one tells him that his young, carefree twenties actually end somewhere around that time, and that the pressure-cooker of real adulthood begins.
He also faces a major turning point in terms of style. The age of 25 is where much of what was acceptable before is no longer cool. If you’ve already reached that plateau, it’s time to take a good inventory of your closet and come over to the adult (yet still youthful) side.
If you’ve yet to hit the milestone, trust me, it comes in the blink of an eye and you have to be prepared. Here’s what not to wear after you’ve hit 25:
Collegiate apparel as fashion Sorry, but your Cornell T-shirt does not look cool with a blazer and jeans…it looks sad.
Solution: Instead, work this fall’s collegiate-inspired trend by wearing a blazer, patterned sweater or menswear vest, a dress shirt and a slim tie.
A parka, hoodie, or jean jacket with a suit I don’t care what those other fashion magazines say, a fur-hooded parka or any other coat you would normally wear with jeans or on a lazy Saturday is not an appropriate choice for sophisticated tailored clothing.
Solution: Two coats that work well with suits: An all-weather trench coat (for those light fall days and nasty rainy weather) and a full-length winter coat (try one in a soft cashmere blend) for those wickedly cold January days. Double or single-breasted is your choice, but I prefer single.
A baseball cap This is a personal prejudice, I’ll admit it. I hate baseball caps. I understand they’re casual, they’re easy, and they block the sun, blah, blah, blah. But they’re also ugly, and most guys tend to wear them within an inch of the cap’s life.
Solution: There are ample casual hats to wear when you’re not watching the game. Livity, Block Headwear, Kangol and Goorin Brothers all have beautifully made, reasonably priced head covers.
