COUPLES

Another quick romantic jaunt could take you to Stowe, Vermont, which provides a historic New England setting, plenty of activities, and several reasonably priced bed and breakfasts. We like the Green Mountain Inn, founded in 1833, where rooms vary by season but are currently priced at $129 through $329 for late autumn. In addition to the requisite array of winter country activities like skiing, snow-boarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, sledding, ice skating, and sled-dog tours, you can sign up for a tour of the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory, tour of the Boyden Valley Winery, meander along the Stowe Recreation Path, the Cabot Cheese Mill, or the Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

The area also boasts a surprising array of restaurants as well. The Green Mountain Inn’s sister inn, Willoughvale Inn on Lake Willoughby in Northern Vermont, is very reasonably priced and offers a more remotely located alternative set in an incomparable landscape.

You can always plan a faux-vacation right in Manhattan. Whether you’ve lived in the city for one year or for most of your life, chances are you haven’t approached it the same way outsiders do. We’re not suggesting you don black socks with sandals and stop to snap a picture of every played out attraction, but you can step outside your normal routine and consider visiting an area of the city you never stop to appreciate.

Though most of us are rather cynical when we see tourists roaming around Times Square with cameras, we should realize that there’s a reason so many people have come to visit. Book a one or two night stay in a nice hotel in the Theatre District: our pick is the Paramount Hotel, seconds from Broadway and a favorite hangout of actors. The hip rooms, whimsically decorated in a palette of whites, feature headboards that are actually gilt-framed Vermeer reproductions. The glamorous, dimly lit Paramount Bar features reasonably priced cocktails that could be great for pre or post-show drinks. The hotel’s upstairs Library Bar, another stylish venue for drinks and dinner, is decorated with mahogany walls and shelves of books above the bar. And of course, should you wish to stay in bed, the hotel offers room service.

You and your lady can split a Superior Room for about $160 apiece per night. During the day, cheesy as it may sound, make an effort to visit the historically significant attractions from Ellis Island to the Carnegie Deli.

THE PERFECT MIX OF BOTH

If you can’t afford a hotel stay and aren’t interested in ‘the sights,’ consider a fun and unexpectedly romantic outing like a wine tour on Long Island. No, it’s not Napa, but you will appreciate the landscape of the East End as travel from vineyard to vineyard. You can make your day still more romantic by arranging a personal tour package—the combination of the wine and the romance almost guarantees your efforts will be rewarded when you get home. A typical Chardonnay-Level Trip Package, for example, would include a limo trip, private itinerary, 5 to 9 wine samples at each vineyard, and a 6-hour minimum tour. It will set you back somewhere around $704 for up to 8 guests; if you can convince your buddies to bring a few dates as well, it’ll only set you back about $85 bucks a person.
