Thanksgiving Weekend - Black Friday Shopping Alternatives
Posted: Monday, November 13, 2006

For many of those lucky enough to be off from work, the day after Thanksgiving—Black Friday—involves camping out at unsightly hours for a spot near the department store, eroding credit card strips and working off your L-tryptophan intake.

Although it would obviously be nice to call in sick the day after Thanksgiving and take a quick hop across the pond for a European weekend as if you were Richard Branson, the reality is that most of us living in Manhattan can't afford such luxuries. And if you can, you're probably in finance and, suffice it to say, your free time is rather limited. While you won’t hear commercials boasting the phrase "What happens in New England stays in New England", and you definitely won't find many tropical tequila-fueled wet T-shirt contests in Pennsylvania, there's something to be said for a relaxing vacation that doesn't require the hassle of plane travel.

BUDDIES

What group of guy friends wouldn’t want to hit up Vegas for a weekend, stay at the Bellagio, and admire the scantily clad ladies at many a Vegas show? But these trips, the scene for many a bachelor party, aren’t exactly easy on the wallet. Why not recreate the same atmosphere at a more local casino? While you might not be able to end your night at a high-class strip club at Foxwoods or Turning Stone Casino, you’ll still be able to enjoy gambling with your buddies and, depending on your casino of choice, a concert.

Also, if you didn’t overload too much on pigskin, college football has some prime matchups that Friday heading into bowl season. You could stick around with a few members of your crew to watch some games. The classic Texas-Texas A&M rivalry game is always on at noon, just in time for you to wake up. This year, two more top-25 teams go at it, as LSU and Arkansas follow that game on Friday. You even have Florida facing Florida State that Saturday, among other rivalry games. This is a perfect time to catch up with friends over a few beers either at a bar or around the living room.
