Testicular Cancer - Checking For Signs And Symptoms
Posted: Saturday, March 31, 2007
By: Steven  Lamm, M.D.

Dear Doc,
I'm in my mid-twenties. I constantly hear from my elders that I should be concerned about testicular cancer. Is there a simple, non-invasive way to check if I'm okay?

Thanks,
Edward

Edward,
Testicular cancer is the 3rd most common form of cancer in men aged 15-19, and the 2nd most common form of cancer in men aged 35-39. Since the 1930s, cases of testicular cancer have doubled and the figure continues to rise. Thankfully, testicular cancer is often curable and won’t necessarily impede fertility (this could be an issue with chemotherapy, check with your doctor regarding options).

Early detection is critical - self-examination makes the diagnosis. Men can examine themselves in the shower (searching for hardness, swelling, and an often painless, sometimes painful lump). Men can also ask their partner to examine them if they desire. If you feel anything questionable in your testicles, go to your doctor immediately. This is not an issue to wait on.

The Bottom Line: Early detection. This common cancer can be overcome if diagnosed early on. Check yourself regularly, and consult a doctor if you notice any irregularities.

Live Well.
