Dear Debonair,
During the winter I go tanning at least once a month. Everyone tells me that I’m destroying my skin. Is there any truth to that? I almost never come out with sunburn.Sun damage is a serious, yet largely unnoticed issue for men. Anyone that has suffered the painful red glow of sunburn has seen the damage on a superficial level – but the true danger is at the microscopic level. Too much exposure to the sun will dry skin cells and weaken the skin’s elasticity. “It’s a problem, and especially for younger guys – they don’t take the time to put on sunblock,” says Truman’s co-founder Joe Marchesi. “Constantly tanning and not using sunblock, or just being in the sun without protection, can give you wrinkles early in life.”
How can the damage be repaired? Marchesi answers, “When people come to me with serious sun damage, I start them with a cooling mask that hydrates the skin. Water is critical to the health of your skin, and keeping it moisturized will help the body heal.”
To prevent the damage, “I tell all my clients to wear sunblock everyday. A teaspoon of SPF 15 or higher should be adequate for the face,” concludes Marchesi.
Here are three sunblock options designed for men, on any budget:
