Perhaps it’s the common encounter with an unpleasant or nasty coworker or employer. Arguments and clashes with a co-worker or superior are a normal part of the working environment. But if a disagreement reaches a boiling point, coming to blows with your rival should be the last of your options.
“Everyone can be turned around, if you know the button to push,” Farrell says. “Usually ‘pushing buttons’ has a negative connotation, but careful questioning will find the responsive personality aspects or interests of this person. Everyone begins to be more cooperative if they feel you share a common interest. Find it.”
ProcrastinationThis still haunts young professionals from its collegiate roots. Leave certain duties to pile up and they will crush you at deadline. Some workers feel that working under the extra performance pressure actually enhances their ability to complete assigned tasks. But if you can admit to crumbling under pressure, considering a new mode of time management can help keep your blood stable.
“If I had one rule to follow without fail each day,” Farrell says, “it would be to make a list, prioritize it and make yourself stick to doing as many of them possible. Procrastination is often fueled by a belief that you can’t do something, but you hide this from yourself and just blow it off as procrastination and ‘that’s the way I am.’ No one wants to be known as someone who waits until the last minute to complete something and then does a rush-job.”
