Restaurant Review - Grey Dog's Coffee

Grey Dog's Coffee

Although Starbucks might desperately try to convince you otherwise, coffee does in fact taste better out of a large, sturdy porcelain mug.

The mug is that sacred vessel that carries strong American-style coffee from pot to mouth. When holding a mug in my hand I feel calm, secure and complacent. The weighty mugs at Grey Dog’s Coffee hold a deliciously jolting cup of Joe ($1.75), and symbolize the hospitality you would expect from a coffee shop in the cozy Village.

During my most recent visit, I stood in line gazing at the tantalizing apple crumbler and other American desserts. Meanwhile, the gentleman standing in front of me casually chatted with the friendly cashier about his current financial troubles. When his bill came, it was on the house. Though I myself did have to pay, I also appreciated the cordial staff. In fact, a random customer actually came up to me and informed me that the candle on my table was precariously close to my laptop. The warmth must be contagious.

Grey Dog’s atmosphere feels worn-in and snug: the blissful sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, the ancient tin adorning the ceiling, and the exposed brick walls remind me of my East Village apartment. The menu, on an oversized (much like everything else here) chalkboard, is central to the décor.

While visiting Grey Dog’s, you may consider getting an afternoon beer to go with your New York Times reading. Grey Dog’s always has three American beers on tap. Maybe you’d like to sip from a glass bottle of Coke. Maybe you prefer a couple of fresh original sandwiches served on inch-thick bread. Though all of their home-style food hits the spot, I usually opt for a sweet, moon-sized chocolate chip cookie to balance the bitterness of my mug of coffee.

On warmer days, dining al fresco or inside with a breeze perfects the ambience. Like any good coffee shop, Grey Dog’s Coffee has that roasted nuttiness drifting through the air. Although no longer canine-friendly (dogs used to lazily plop down tableside and nibble free dog treats), this is certainly the most people-friendly coffee shop in the city.
