In the steel jungle of Midtown Manhattan, the last thing you’d expect to find is an intimate restaurant with old-fashioned American favorites, but somehow Penelope fits in perfectly. Dimly lit and packed with young locals, it’s the perfect place to take a date or meet friends for a hearty and affordable meal. With main courses around $10 and lots of interesting beer and wine, it’s easy to see why this is a neighborhood stand by. Our favorites included the garlicky hummus spiked with paprika, a juicy burger with perfectly crisp fries, and a unique cube-shaped chicken meatball salad. Desserts like red velvet cake and chocolate cupcakes are also homemade and ideal for sharing. If you’re taking a date, make sure you hit the ATM first – this country-style kitchen is cash only.
