Hey Ask Debonair,

How can I manage and maintain a light beard or perfect level of scruff without looking like I’m trying too hard?

When it comes to the “scruffy” look, confidence is king.  For this reason, when managing your facial hair, it is important to be honest with yourself.  If you feel like you are trying too hard or are just plain uncomfortable with the way you look, those same vibes will certainly be sent to (and felt by) others.

That being said, the first step in maintaining your facial hair is finding the desired length.  The length should be one which you are comfortable with and fits your personality.

Once a length is determined, you can maintain this desired length by purchasing an electric clipper (Wahl or Oster are two fine options).  These clippers have attachments which have varying length possibilities (shorter or longer).

Remember, the maintenance of your facial hair should compliment your facial features, not conflict with them. If you have very round features, make sure you sharpen your facial hair. If you have sharp features, round off your scruff.

Best,

John Allan

while it looks really sexy, I am not a fan of the scruff for the make out… it can hurt delicate feminine skin. so, I think its fine for day to day ,but, please men, if you have a date… clean that up :) she will thank you for a clean close shave many ways.
