The seven tailors who make up Wilfred’s Tailoring are accustomed to accolades for their flawless workmanship, professional manner and quality customer service. Opened in 1988 by the gregarious Wilfred Rosario, the shop is a well-oiled machine that runs full steam all day long from its new location near the Flatiron Building. The tailors here regularly execute alterations for design houses like Helmut Lang and Costume National, as well as demanding clients in the television and film industry. Custom work is available, but alterations are the clear specialty here, especially when it comes to renovating older suits and trousers to update the style and fit. Bring in an old suit from your father’s wardrobe and Mr. Rosario and his team can advise on specific changes that are sure to breathe new life into the garment.

High above Fifth Avenue in a tasteful, masculine suite full of dark wood and reams of suiting fabric, the father-son team of Lal and Harry Bhambi has been custom-making luxurious suits, shirts, and even topcoats and tuxedos since 1968. Garments from Bhambi’s feature details like hand-finished button holes, and all custom clothes can be altered free of charge for life if you desire a different style or other change. Many in the know, however, consider Bhambi’s to be the gold standard in handling difficult alterations, such as re-cutting suit trousers, or shrinking the size of a suit jacket. Case in point, Bhambi’s is the tailor of choice for Brioni, and when we visited the shop, we found it lined with a small fortune in the finest bespoke clothes, all marked up for changes.

For straightforward alterations, such as pants that need hemming and taking up shirt sleeves, that are both skillfully done and affordable, there is no better place to go than Joseph “Peppino” Rettura’s shop on the Upper East Side. Since opening the store in 1973, the Italian-trained tailor and his small staff have steadily built a reputation for both speed and expertise with a needle and thread. Peppino Tailors is one of the few reputable tailors that will take same day jobs and in most cases can complete emergency work while you wait. Some customers report that service is brusque, but we attribute any perceived attitude as a symptom of the sizeable demand and high-maintenance clients that frequent the shop.

Check out my boy LNC Custom Tailors on Baxter street in Chinatown. He does a lot of tailoring for lawyers/cops nearby on Centre st. He made me an ill blazer from custom fabric I purchased in Brooklyn. Process included several fittings at various stages of construction and took about a month. Really good craftsmanship and willingness to work with the customer’s own style. I paid much less for my custom cashmere blazer than you could have found RTW at any nice boutique.
