Everyone in a costume is invited to join in the fun as it rolls up 6th Avenue in the West Village. In addition to the thousands of live participants, dozens of live bands and droves of giant puppets add to the festive atmosphere. Those spectators who don’t want to watch it from the sidewalks can watch it from the couch—it will be televised locally on NY1 the night of the parade. Given the event’s rich tradition and the sheer volume of anonymous abandon, it’s no surprise that this parade is listed in the book
100 Things to Do Before You Die.http://www.halloween-nyc.com/
Of course, the Village Parade is just one of the many events in NYC commemorating All Hallow’s Eve. The city is replete with events and parties — below are some of the highlights:
Katwalk Halloween Bash October 28th
A three-hour open bar, and cash prize for sexiest female costume. The most common costume here will likely be Drunken, Slack-jawed Gawker.
The Manhattan Society’s 3rd Annual Halloween Costume Ball October 28th
Another open bar, but this one is for a good cause – the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Costumes are apparently not mandatory, only encouraged; but we don’t suggest you show up in your usual Saturday night attire dressed as the guy who hates fun.
The Amazing Halloween Race October 29th
“Ghoulish" clues will guide you through the city for this “spooky" Halloween-themed race through the city. Bring an unlimited MetroCard, wear a costume, and given the organizers’ penchant for “scary? adjectives, be prepared for them to call it “Boo York? at least once.
Masque Ball October 29th
Billing itself as Gotham’s Dark Alternative Elegant event, this party’s posted dress code includes “aliens, drag, horns, fangs and modern primitives", which makes it the place you are most likely to see a Martian Dracula in a dress.
Halloween Parade After Party October 31st
This is the official after-party for the Village parade. The following is a description from the website — “Midnight: With flames blazing & twirling about, witness the virgin sacrifice ritual in honor of awakening the Demon Queen." It seems to us that this might be just a pinch better than watching Leno.
Halloween Masquerade Ball October 31st
With sponsors Esquire and MySpace, this event stars DJ Spider – whom we assume gets less work around Christmas.
Costume Ball at the Theater for the New City October 31st
A celebration of theater, dancing, and all things creative. You can “gobble couscous from a coffin lid beginning at 7:30 pm" – which should help you to plan your evening.
