To some people a steak is a steak is a steak. However, to the more discerning critics of steer (who also happen to be readers of Debonair) the palate craves not only sustenance, but flavor, texture, ambience, and value. The following ten venues are what they consider to be some of the best NYC has to offer in all categories…
1. Sparks (Midtown East) Old boys club specializing in sirloin. No gimmicks, just steak.
2. Palm (Midtown East) Another of many in the midtown east area, but probably one of the oldest Palm has exploded into an international chain serving up delicious steaks and seafood in settings from old boys club to modern and chic.
3. BLT Steak (57th & Park) A modern twist on the traditional American steakhouse with elements of the French Bistro style from the king of the New York bistro, Laurent Tourondel.
4. Uncle Jack’s (Midtown West) Featuring the Kobe Sirloin and lobster cocktail this West Side staple started by waiters and chefs from Peter Luger stacks up as well as any of the older venues in its class.
5. Angelo & Maxie’s (Gramercy Park) This fairly new restaurant (opened in 1996) is often considered the “best value” by many of our readers. The restaurant’s menu, split into two categories – meat & not meat – offering 10-oz martinis, 1 lb. Maine lobster cocktail, 2 lb. prime rib, & 3 lb. whole roasted chicken, emphasizes American abundance at reasonable prices.
6. Michael Jordan’s Steak House N.Y.C. (Grand Central Station) If you have time before catching the train to your chateau in Ossining, Mr. Draper stop into the bar with views of the bustling travelers and try one of their signature cocktails. Through the end of September you can “Eat Like Mike” did prior to all of his games with the Pre Game Ritual Dinner featuring the Delmonico steak served with a baked potato and broccoli for $39. When dining a la Mike, be sure to raise the dinner’s complimentary glass of Champagne to celebrate his induction!
7. Robert’s Steakhouse (Midtown West) Another reader favorite thanks to its location – deep inside the Penthouse Executive Club. Enjoy the perfectly prepared New York Strip Steak, with a bold glass of red, creamed spinach, and the lady of your choice. This one’s not for the whole family.
8. Dylan Prime (Tribeca) Great steak with all the modern amenities including their signature Ultimate Martini, and new cocktails such as Pie-tinis – made to taste like your favorite pies such as Key Lime, Apple Pie a la mode, and Peach Cobbler, and the Cake-tails featuring flavors like German Chocolate cake, Amaretto Cheese Cake, and 24 Carrot Cake.
9. Keen’s (Midtown) The steaks, waiters, and décor could be any part of Peter Luger, Palm, or Sparks. However, it’s their other-worldly mutton chop and iceberg wedge that make them stand alone in the world of midtown meat and potatoes.
10. Strip House (Union Square) The name refers to their signature New York Strip – a name that should be swapped with Robert’s for obvious reasons, but works perfectly with their bordello-style décor. The steak is considered the best in the city by many. It’s certainly not the cheapest, but should work when trying to impress a client. Take your date somewhere else unless she’s into that sort of thing.

Keen’s is fantastic! It’s my go-to whenever there’s a special occasion or parents in town. It has an amazing history and terrific service, and in my opinion, the porterhouse there is better than Luger’s.
Fun list, thanks!
