Dear Debonair,
I'm in the market for a new suit. I know all the European suits are being cut with no pleats and no cuffs. Is this look for everyone? Is it for a younger guy like myself or could my father wear it too? Will this trend last? Is it worth investing into suits designed this way?Let's clarify that when we say European suit we are referring to the suit with the broader, more pronounced shoulder, higher armpits and a fitted pant. American suits, by comparison, are generally fuller (hence the pleats) and lack a certain flair possessed by their European counterparts.
Though slimmer, sleeker suits are certainly favored among high fashion and those of a younger age group, it really comes down to body type. If your dad is a relatively slim guy, he could pull off the look. But, unless he's Italian, it's best to go with an understated suit (i.e. no peaked lapels). If he's a larger man, the fuller cut of the American suit is going to not only accommodate his style but also his comfort. Just remember three fs: fit, form and functionality. The perfect suit will marry all three into one harmonious look. As far as longevity goes, Europeans have been wearing their suits for decades and show no sign of slowing down. If it works with your style, a classic European suit can last season to season.
