Dear Debonair, I just bought a brown suit with a blue pinstripe. How should I go about matching my shirts and ties to it? Do I need to pay attention to the stripe and only wear shirts and ties with shades of blue in it?
What you want to remember about that blue pinstripe is that it’s a detail, and as such, it should remain something that suddenly catches someone’s eye and makes him or her appreciate your attention to subtly. That being the case, it’s certainly no problem to play up the blue with complimentary shades in your tie or shirt. But contrasting the blue with another color can be just as effective – just remember to keep it subtle.
Don’t incorporate colors that will turn the whole ensemble into an eyesore. Instead pick pale shades that make your suit look interesting but classy. Pink always compliments blue nicely, as does yellow. In fact, a crisp white shirt will also pair well with the blue stripe as long as your tie is doing the work for you.
