Dear Debonair,
I dread shaving. Every time that I shave, I’m left with terrible razor bumps. What causes this and how do I clear it up.According Joe Marchesi, co-founder of Truman’s Gentleman’s Groomers, “In-grown hairs, also known as razor bumps, are the most common issue men face when caring for their skin.” The general cause of in-grown hairs – a dull razor blade. Always use a fresh blade and you should experience less of a problem.
If you are suffering from existing in-grown hairs, “You can do one of two things,” says Marchesi. “Either pull the hair out with tweezers or exfoliate – although exfoliation requires a lot of patience.” To pull the hair out, clean the face with a mild soap, exfoliate to open the pores and clear away dry skin, and finally, use fine tweezers to extract the hair. To clear up the problem strictly by exfoliation, time is key. “Eventually, the skin will clear itself and the hair will just fall out – but it’s going to take a week or so,” says Marchesi.
In each case, a good exfoliant is critical. An exfoliant is an abrasive cream designed to gently loosen and clear dead skin away from healthy skin.
Here are three exfoliant options for men, on any budget:
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant - $47.50A premium exfoliant that utilizes rice as a mild abrasive.
Nickel Super Clean Face Scrubbing Gel - $26.00A gentle exfoliant that utilizes wax beads to clear away dead skin.
Baxter Skin Toner Facial Scrub - $15.00A moisturizing exfoliant that utilizes walnut shell powder as a mild abrasive.
