Know Your FoeThe first step to solving a problem is addressing it. See the American Medical Association’s definition of Male Pattern Baldness as well as the treatment options
here.
The TreatmentsFor all the products you’ll see on television and success stories you’ll read in the AM papers, legitimate treatments are far and few between. I only consider three to be realistic:
Minoxidil (Rogaine) – The most advertised and subsequently well-known treatment. Rogaine is a topical solution applied directly to the scalp, thereby stimulating hair follicles. Available in foam or liquid. Effective only during period of usage.
Pro: The most inexpensive treatment option.
Con: Requires a dedicated, twice a day treatment schedule. Possible skin-irritant.
Finasteride (Propecia) -- Available by prescription only, Propecia is a once-a-day pill that inhibits the bodies production of dihydrotestosterone(DHT). Effective only during period of usage.
Pro: Widely considered to be the most effective non-surgical treatment.
Con: Expensive (Approx. $2.50 per day). Not proven to be effective on receding-hairline. Rare sexual side effects.
Hair Transplant – Hair from the back of the head is transplanted to areas in need by a trained hair loss specialist.
Pro: Results are often good/very good and permanent
Con: Very expensive. Results dependent on skill of doctor. Possibility of multiple surgeries.
