Eyes & Voice Wide OpenStudies have shown that men communicate differently than women: Guys tend not to speak face-to-face; we stand (and sometimes sit) at an angle from each another. Check it out the next time you’re out. Women are much more comfortable with eye contact; they feel slighted if not spoken to directly. Authority figures react the same way. (After all, aren’t the women in charge?)
Scientific studies have also shown that young (and thus, more innocent – and cute) faces have proportionately wider eyes. Check out babies, puppies, or kittens. Check out how cartoons are drawn. Squinty or downward eyes tend to convey anger, frustration, sadness, guilt, or hidden agendas.
Regardless of your boss’ gender, maintain eye contact at all times. Young males are notorious at drifting their eyes away. This implies disinterest or insincerity. Look away only to show that you’re pondering.
Regardless of your age or innocence, slightly widen your eyes. Wide eyes convey interest and confidence. It’s like smiling with your eyes.
Lilting your voice works in a similar way: Slightly heighten your pitch and enunciate your words. (Teenage boys tend to slur in monotone.) Like the eye tricks, voice lilting implies openness, yet confidence. Quickening your speech also conveys excitement; but fast-talkers sound like they are nervous, or con men.
Wide-eye contact and voice-lilting work on a subconscious level. If anybody notices, you’re over-doing it. As you practice these subtle techniques, it will become unconscious habits. BTW: All this creates a markedly positive response especially with women (boss or otherwise).
