House Cleaning - Tips For Tackling The Closet

Behold the Vernal Equinox. Despite the frigid temperatures, Spring is in fact here. For many this means - Spring Cleaning. Alas, in all the cleanly commotion, one oft ignored household area tends to suffer. Rather than treating their closet as a fashion epicenter, most use it as a junk repository. If your cedar shed is a mess of twisted wire hangers and piles of sweatshirts - this spring it’s time for a change.

The Buddy System - How many times have you gone through your old, soiled tee shirts only to save them all as “gym clothes”? Use a buddy to get over your separation anxiety and start ditching your old rags. This is never an easy process as we tend to invent sentimentality. “But I bought that shirt three weeks before I met my girlfriend...” Who cares, it’s stained, ditch it. Your closet is a reflection of your lifestyle, keep it neat, keep it clean, and don’t be afraid to shake things up once in a while.

The Pick-Up - So what do you do with all the clothing that you have purged? The noble thing of course - donate it. To schedule a hassle free Salvation Army pickup, call 1-800-95-TRUCK.

The Aftermath/Got Wood? - The truck pulled away and your closet is so empty you feel like you’ve been robbed. Excellent, it’s time for a fresh start.

First order of business - throw out all of the wire hangers you received from your local dry cleaner. And while you’re at it throw out the plastic ones as well. A good wooden hanger will help preserve the integrity of your garments (less stretching and pulling) and make you look like the young professional that you are. If you have a spacious closet and require a large quantity of hangers, try buying them at a wholesaler to save money, or split a box with a friend.

Stay seasonal. As the weather gets warmer, start putting your heavy coats into storage(space bags, bins, etc). Space in the city is usually in short supply, so don’t sacrifice half of your closet real estate to a Gore-Tex jacket that wrinkles all of your dress shirts. Keep your closet stocked only with items you plan on wearing in the next three months.

Don’t let the mess accumulate. Set realistic goals and stick to them. Schedule a cleaning session once a season and consolidate your wardrobe keeping only the best.
