Health Tip - Working Out While Sick

Back Pain

Dear Doc,
I train 4 to 6 times a week at my local gym. I’ve noticed that taking time off hinders my gains. What should I do when I get sick – rest for the week or work through it? –Eddie

Eddie,
An important component to successful training is rest. Everyone needs it, and the older we get, the more we need. If you’ve seen a slowing in your gains, it’s likely from overtraining. Hitting the gym daily is not necessary or rewarding – this kind of behavior is usually obsessive. Try to take off five full days for every six weeks of training – you should experience great results.

In regard to working out while sick, you certainly can, but at the peril of your gym-going peers. Touching a multitude of weights and equipment while ill increases risk for others.
