Christopher Cortez, winner of The Cut

An accomplished visual artist and fashion designer, Christopher Cortez spent eight weeks using his artistic abilities and strong work ethic to compete for, and win, Tommy Hilfiger’s “The Cut.” Awarded his own label, Cortez currently designs premium men’s accessories and continues to satisfy his passion for the arts. Cortez says, “Men's style can be endless using permanent and classic pieces." Here are some tips to keep you looking a cut above the rest.

1. How can you update your look without feeling you’ve ventured too far from your own aesthetic?

-Start by adding a little color to your wardrobe. Color does a lot for a man’s complexion.

-Tighten up with slimmer fitting clothes. Fit compliments the man’s body, making him look a little neater.

2. How can you get a little hipper without feeling out of your element?

-Take two opposing categories of the same color family from your wardrobe and wear them together.

For Example:

A sportcoat with a windbreaker.

A sweatshirt with a shirt and tie.

3. What are the hottest trends for this coming season?

-The updated anorak pullover with a classic dress shirt and tie.

-Dress trousers with sneakers or flip-flops.

-Shorts with wingtip shoes.

4. What are the 3 easiest things a man can do to get this season’s look?

-Simplify, simplify, simplify.

-Mix to match.

-Smarten up with a waistcoat.

-Add accessories: ties, scarves, hats, cuff links and tie clips.

5. What’s the one thing he should “get over”?

-The sloppy look.

6. What’s the most important thing that men don’t know about fashion or shopping?

-There is a strategy to buying clothes. Make an investment and build a library. Buy timeless pieces that will last the duration and interject common items to mix it up and keep it fresh.
