It’s 7:15 AM at O'Hare airport. Roberto Alfonso Felipe sits patiently at his gate holding a book of fabrics - ready to bid a temporary farewell to the Windy City. He knows that a weeklong trip that included Philadelphia, Phoenix, and All-Star weekend in Las Vegas is nearing a close. But this was no vacation, merely business as usual for the twenty three year old fashionista/finance student. Next stop – afternoon midterms at New York University.
Felipe, founder and designer of the made to measure fashion house Alfonso Felipe, leads an unconventional life. Leveraging a childhood friendship with Chicago Bull’s forward Luol Deng, Felipe has become a household name for Ben Gordon and numerous professional athletes – their personal bespoke tailor and stylist. A basketball player himself (Felipe shared captain duties with Deng at Blair Academy, a New Jersey high school) – Felipe was able to combine a love for fashion with a down to earth attitude and soft sales approach.
Felipe’s custom suits begin with a personal meeting and conclude with a personal delivery – the catalyst of extensive international travel. An itinerary made all the more impressive by Felipe’s “day job.” Felipe, a student at the Stern School of Business, regularly attends classes, yet his ambition strays far from Wall Street. Intent on running a flourishing fashion empire, the budding entrepreneur has achieved a degree of success far exceeding his years.
