Thrift stores should be used as a resource to supplement your existing wardrobe – not to build one from scratch. You will not find a brand new three-piece Canali suit at the Salvation Army for $100. But, make no mistake: there is always a bargain to be had.
Thrift store shopping has become so popular in recent years that it has spawned its own slang term. We at Debonair decided to give “thrifting” a go – here’s what we found:
Finding a Decent Thrift StoreTheThriftShopper.com is a national directory of thrift stores sorted by location, user reviews, and charitable cause. Shopping at a charity-driven store is ideal - new items are often donated to the store and revenues are used to fund philanthropic causes.
Items to Look ForAccessories - Belts, hats, sunglasses, etc. Usually priced at a few dollars or less, these items are a great value proposition. Our best find – a pair of 1955 Ray-Ban’s for $5.
Tee Shirts – Where else can you find a vintage Rolling Stones tee shirt for $1.99? Alas, with the popularity of “thrifting” on the rise, tees are often the first thing to go. If the shirt is on a hanger, be sure to check that the fabric in the shoulders hasn’t pulled too dearly.
