Denim Depot of the Moment - Chip and Pepper

By: The  Debonairs

While scouring Soho/Noho/NoLita for spring tee shirts, The Debonairs came across a curiously hip-yet-rustic shop on Mulberry Street - Chip and Pepper. With a pleasant assortment of vintage styled jeans, we were hooked at first glance.

A premium line with premium prices, we found C&P particularly engaging because of an authenticity that most lines lack. So many times vintage goods feel "forced." At C&P, we found the clothing to be as relaxed as the atmosphere of the store.

Editor's Note: Remembering Chip and Pepper's short lived NBC show, we were compelled to find out more about the dynamic duo of denim. Here's the skinny...

All About Chip and Pepper Foster

Names: Chip and Pepper Foster (identical twins)

Passport: St. Boniface in Winnipeg, Canada

Family: Dad ran the Elman’s Pickles empire and mom was a Canadian starlet who starred in several Fellini films.

Starting Young: Sold shoes and board shorts out of car to pay back debts accrued in high school. Back story: Chip saw a sneaker line he loved and called the company to pitch himself as a sales rep. After securing the “gig” he collected $5,000 in orders from family and friends only to have the company vanish – with his $5,000. He had to pay them back somehow.

Early History: Shot to fluorescent stardom in the 1980s with a Canadian fashion empire that made them millionaires by age 20. Subsequently crashed into a branding disaster when their name was over-licensed and they eventually went into receivership.

Comeback Kids: Handpicked by then NBC president Brandon Tartikoff to host a Saturday morning cartoon show on NBC in the early 1990s. Hosts of E! Entertainment’s the “Look for Less.” Smartened up in terms of business savvy. In 1995, opened an L.A. boutique called Golf Punk specializing in vintage denim and T-shirts. After noticing the popularity of their vintage jeans among local hipsters, the boys decided they might be ready to have a denim line to call their own.

Denim Dot-Com: “Everybody’s got a denim line… denim is the dot-com industry of the new millennium. We’re being really careful in the way we’re expanding,” said Pepper Foster. Growing at a strategically slow and steady pace, the duo hand pick their retail locations and limit growth.

Global Empire: 42 countries around the world, in international cities such as: Dubai, Hong Kong and Sydney.

Measuring Success: “In 1991, we were doing a dollar for almost every person in Canada…” Chip Foster said. “Our names ended up on everything from sunglasses to barbeque sauce, but then we couldn’t afford to pay the rent. We learned a lot and success is much sweeter the second time around. We are smarter, we take it slower and we enjoy it more.”

Paying Homage: The duo never forgets where they came from, and all the names in the line reflect their heritage. A best-seller in the women’s line is a jean called “Pamela,” named after their mother. “The Nik” is Chip’s wife and “Katie” – a top selling trouser – is named for his sister-in-law. Canada plays a big part in the naming process as well. Lake of the Woods belt is named for their summer home, Flin Flon jacket, Canada Tire chinos, Big Pickle and Picklewagon jeans. “Growing up Canadian, and getting to do your business in America… it’s very special, it’s like being a pro hockey player,” jokes Chip.

Celebrity Following: Britney Spears, Beyonce, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Tyra Banks, Halle Berry, Paris Hilton, Hilary Duff, Mischa Barton, Giselle Bundchen, Tom Cruise, Stacy Keibler, Uma Thurman, Rachel McAdams, Zooey Deschanel, Orlando Bloom, Usher, Ed Burns, Colin Farrell and Matthew McConaughey.

Red, White & True: Chip & Pepper products are all proudly manufactured in the United States.
