Dating Advice - Coping With A Break Up
Posted: Monday, October 23, 2006

Rob from Swingers says it best:
“See, Mike, the only difference between giving up and not giving up is if you take her back when she wants to come back. But you can't do anything to make her want to come back. In fact, you can only do stuff to make her not want to come back.?

But New York is somewhat big, right? You think that you could just hibernate in another district and not have to see her. ‘It’s like dating someone at Penn State: you could hook up during freshman orientation and never see her until graduation night four years later.

Of course, Manhattan somehow morphs into high school when it comes to sharing a city with an ex. Out of sight, out of mind? Not in the Little Apple…

Eight million people live here, with hundreds of thousands of singles around who are about our age. But it can still seem like you are running into her in the Park, at the Knicks game, or in a dive bar that you’ve never been to before.

How does she keep finding you? Did she plant a GPS device in your food before the breakup? And of course, when you bump into each other, you’re alone, un-showered and basically look like you just returned from a marathon, while she and her new co-star emerge as if they just got off a Hollywood set.

In essence, you’re living Jennifer Aniston’s life: everywhere you turn, there’s your Brad Pitt with the lovely Angelina Jolie. In your fragile little mind, your ex will always appear to have traded up, and the new man will be better-looking and more successful than you.

I have experienced this scenario exactly once, and my friends agree that the slippery slope of desperation usually happens like this: You send a long, rambling email to her, usually written past midnight when alcohol has a cruel way of letting our fingers do the talking. She sees the time stamp on the email, reads the horrifying words, and proceeds to lose the last bit of respect she once had for you.
