Aliens, superheroes, and sex – there’s nothing better than a good summer blockbuster, but I find that overpriced tickets and long lines degrade the experience no matter how nice the weather. I long for the drive-in days of monster-movie make-out sessions under the stars for a couple of bucks or even catching a free show from the lot next door with a couple of beers. Of course, living in the city presents a challenge to get my old school cinema fix, but it’s not impossible. If you can’t get to the drive in this season you can still enjoy films while basking in the moonlight by getting involved with these outdoor theatres – the tickets are cheaper, the movies are better, and you can bring your own snacks. Go with friends or take your best girl; there’s no better way to enjoy the season.
New York City: Rooftop Films This Brooklyn-based cinema plays independent flicks and short films on factory rooftops, parks, and waterfront piers all over New York City during the summer. The company positions its 30-week summer series as an ongoing film festival. Check the website for the full schedule.
Bryant Park Film Festival Yeah, it’s crowded. But seeing big screen classics from the center of midtown Manhattan for free is not to be missed. The lawn opens at 5pm so take a half day and make it happen.
