Choosing the Right Product For Your Hair

Hair product

What’s with all the men’s hair products available these days? It seems like the amount of choices has gone from a few gels to dozens of different products. Do certain products work better with certain hairstyles? How do I match a product to my hair type? -Mike

Mike,
There are probably more men’s grooming products available today than ever before. This is merely a sign of the times. Proper grooming isn’t just socially acceptable – it’s encouraged. A greater variety of products have also allowed men more freedom in tailoring their best look, especially regarding men’s hairstyles.

The most critical aspect of hair care is the haircut itself. I can’t help but be amused when I see some Wall Street types scoff at paying $12 for a haircut, yet they go out and buy a $150 Zegna tie without blinking an eye. Remember, you can only wear a fashion item a few times per month – you wear your haircut every day. Investing in a good haircut can keep you looking good and feeling great about yourself. Visiting a hair professional also allows you the opportunity for one-on-one advice. Product recommendations are always more meaningful from someone you trust, so it’s great to build that relationship.

Below you will find a few general guidelines regarding men’s hairstyles and products.

Long hair is typically complimented by a light gel or defining cream. Stay away from any super firm/gripping products (i.e. the Pat Riley look). The goal here is to have long, naturally flowing hair.

Short hair will often benefit from a good pomade. For dull hair, I suggest using a shiny pomade to give it a bit of spark. For hair that has a natural shine, I would stick to a matte pomade. For very short hair, you can opt out of using any product.

Fine hair can often require a softer touch. I recommend using light gel, if anything at all. The goal with fine or thinning hair is to prevent sticking and clumps (which make thin hair noticeable).

Thick hair will benefit from heavy pomades and fiber gum.

When using hair care products, don’t use too much. For most men, a dime-size of product should suffice. Smear the product around in your hands and never apply it directly to the hair.

Best,
John
