Best Pickles Guss’ Lower East Side Pickles 85 Orchard St. (btw Broome and Grand Sts.) 800-620-4877. 90 years ago the Lower East Side had at least forty pickle shops, people sold produce from pushcarts and bagels developed a hole so they could be stacked on a long pole and sold in the streets. Today, the Lower East Side has a vegan teashop owned by Moby and only one of the original pickle shops left. I like to think they lasted because they were the best. If you’ve never had one, Guss’ sour pickles will redefine cured cucumbers for you.
Best Black and White Cookies Glaser’s Bake Shop 1670 First Ave (btw 87th & 88th St.) 212-289-2562 “Look to the cookie” shouted Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry’s plea for racial harmony as expressed through cookie is the New York comfort food of my youth. Found in delis and old-fashioned bakeshops throughout the city, perhaps no food is more symbolic of New York. Black and whites in plastic bags are a recent development and are always disappointing so head to Glaser’s where they’ve been making them for 100 years.
