Everyone wants to be Don Draper these days. Since you don’t work at Sterling Cooper all that smoking, drinking and sexual harassment is liable to get you fired, so why not focus instead on being the best dressed guy in the office. Just because you don’t wear a suit everyday doesn’t mean you can’t look damn good in your business casual. Forget the baggy, pleated pants, the oversized dress shirts and those double wide ties. It’s time to slim down and shape up. With that being said, give any number of these featured items a chance and you might very well be accepting that promotion as well as an invitation for drinks with that new cute girl from HR. Welcome to the new business casual.
Brooks Brothers Extra Slim Fit Shirt
No matter what your body type you will most surely look better in a slim fitting shirt. Try out one of the new extra slim fit shirts available at Brooks Brothers for a traditional look with a modern fit. Available in both oxford and broadcloth, pick up one of the two tone or colored stripe options.
When reaching for your tie in the morning you want to go with something slim and youthful. The knit tie has been having an extended moment of recent and there is no reason not grab your own. It adds some texture to your outfit and does away with the stuffy-ness usually associated with neckwear.
As with most things in your wardrobe fit is key. The Bowery Pant from J. Crew treads the often blurred line of slim and skinny and comes away a winner. With a perfectly slimmed down hip and leg, these pants will flatter your form without drawing unwanted attention. These chinos are perfect for the both workplace and the weekend.
Much like the Brooks Brothers shirts above, what we have here is an updated classic. Chances are guys in your office will be wearing penny loafers too, but none of them will look this good. With an elongated toe and sleeker silhouette The Bass Dover is the new classic. The Weejun style penny loafer has been around for ages, but it has never in all its years, looked this good.
Even with your suit staying in the closet it’s still possible to add some of that great late 1950’s flair you love. A tie bar can dress up your business casual look without being too ostentatious. When it comes to any male accessory simple and classic is always your best bet. Go with this unadorned sterling silver option for that Sterling Cooper edge.

Excellent article. Now if only those guys over 35 would realize this could revitalize their looks and that it’s not just for we young folks! Love the knit tie to spice it up without getting out of hand. Great work as always.
Nice post Lawrence! I definitely agree that just because the word casual is in there doesn’t mean you have to resort to a polo shirt. I’m really glad America is emerging from it’s recent overly casual past and starting to care about it’s appearance again.
Great article, I could see myself in each one of those items. Though, I don’t (by far) wear a suit every day to the office.
Men’s fashion has been frozen in time for 50 or 60 years. Why? I mean, look at these pictures in this post: wow – a slightly browner shiny dress shoe… how exciting – kaki pants – will they be pleated this year? Ooh! Vertical stripes on the dress shirt…. I mean, what’s up with men’s fashion? It’s like the almost imperceptible changes they make each year in car models. Why is women’s fashion so dynamic? Why can women wear colors, and not men?
Isn’t there a fashion designer out there willing to create beauty for men?
