Creation by means of destruction is the concept behind this leather armchair designed by Maarten Baas. The charred appearance of the wood, which has been coated in ebony and upholstered in black leather, does not come artificially by way of machine but rather by natural chemical reaction. The wood has been “finished with fire” – that is, actually burned. This aesthetic also provides the consumer with a uniqueness, as each piece is distinct due to the nature of its construction. This may be one reason for the hefty price tag, $4,490.00 (Matter). Nonetheless, the “smoke armchair” pun is appropriate here.

On this day 43 years ago The Beatles released the record Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Transforming their look from monochromatic suits and mop top haircuts to Fu Manchu moustaches and quite the colorful garb, Sgt. Peppers introduced psychedilia to mainstream culture.

This video of Strawberry Fields Forever would prove to be the watershed moment of this change. The first single released before Sgt. Peppers, the video was the first time the public at large saw The Beatles in 4 months. Comparatively tame for the standards to today, it was quite a shock for ‘67. Enter the summer of love.

Combining elements of radio, theatre, and filmmaking and produced at the time when TV technology was advancing, these astonishingly choreographed, socially progressive and brilliantly acted 8 live American ‘teleplays,’ brought Broadway-quality drama to our homes. Curated for PBS in the early 1980s as the series The Golden Age of Television, the award-winning programme features collections from crew members and key cast. They were conceived by such up-and-comers as John Frankenheimer, Rod Sterling, and stars like Paul Newman, Julie Harris, Mickey Rooney, and Piper Laurie. With a length of 478 minutes on 3 discs, this set is fitted with commentaries by the directors, interviews with the cast and crew, along with a booklet featuring an essay by curator Ron Simon along with his notes on each program – priced at $39.96 at the Criterion store.
