With only a few weeks before the release of Hollis Browne’s latest EP, we invited the band to the Casa Debonair. Amidst their antics, we were able to get Mike (leader singer) and Nick (guitarist) to sit down for a few questions.
Debonair Magazine: So how did you guys get together?
Mike: 6 degrees type of thing. We all know each other from high school back in Queens. So and so jammed with this guy sort of thing. It was easy to put the pieces together. We were all friends first.
Nick: We officially became a band...I’d say January 2005.
DM: So what is the inspiration behind the music?
Mike: We all bring a different spice to the group. Bands like the Beatles are a huge inspiration. In terms of sound, we’re a mixture of folk, blues, gospel, country, and funk. We got it all.
DM: A potpourri if you will?
Mike: Potpourri is that what you said, huh?
DM: Yes, potpourri.
Mike: Are you writing that down?
DM: Yes. Anyway...so what were some of the early obstacles?
Nick: We all have different aspirations.
Mike: In the beginning, a song sounds different in each of our heads. When a member of the band first introduces a new song, we all like to approach it differently, but ultimately, we decide as a group. No one member has more pull. Everyone has a say.
DM: So there is no “leader” of the group.
Mike: The leader is a limitation of where things can develop; an idea can come from anywhere and anyone. Plus I just don’t like the way the word sounds. Leader is too much of a dictatorship.
Nick: We each step up on different songs. We write the music together, but of course if it’s someone’s inspiration, they’re going to really help develop it and educate the group.
DM: So any feuds, problems, egos?
Nick: Nothing of the sort to date. We are a reflection of each other. We’ve known each other way too long to let anything like that happen.
