Dear Debonair,
I was recently invited to an event. The invitation says the dress code is "black tie optional." What exactly does this mean? And with my limited wardrobe (and budget), I'm at a loss as to what I should wear, help!
-Alex, Upper West SideDebonair: Alex, I feel your pain. Event wardrobes aren't always as easy as black and white tie. "Black tie optional" means tuxedo dress is not required. You're probably reading this with a sigh of relief. No penguin suit for you, right?
Well, hang on. With a tricky dress code such as this, you should always read between the lines. While tuxedos aren't
mandatory, depending on the type of event, they're most likely
recommended. Recall everything you know about the event, including the look of the invitation, as clues to its formality. Has this event been featured in society pages? Do the companies or other guests belong to a high political or social stature? Who invited you?
With that said, if you insist on going sans tuxedo, you can still look polished to perfection. Your best bet is to wear a black suit, a fresh white dress shirt, a black tie, black dress socks and high-shine black dress shoes. And stay away from gaudy neck jewelry. A beautiful pair of French cuffs and an elegant watch should do the trick.

| WHAT-TO-WEAR CRIB SHEET |
Before you RSVP your regrets, heres a quick-and-easy guide to wardrobe event planning. Print it out, tack it to the inside of your closet door, and be relieved that you will never again look at your clothing in fear.
WHITE TIE: The most formal of all, this dress code includes a black coat with tails, black tuxedo pants, and a white vest and bowtie.
BLACK TIE: A traditional tuxedo is required.
BLACK TIE OPTIONAL (or INVITED): A traditional tuxedo is not required. If you choose not to wear Black Tie, opt for a black suit, black necktie, and a white dress shirt.
SEMI-FORMAL: A dark suit is appropriate.
DRESSY CASUAL: A dark suit or suit separates, with tie. A monochromatic black look (suit, shirt, tie, shoes) is fashionable and very slimming.
BUSINESS CASUAL:
Option 1: Suit separates with a dress shirt.
Option 2: A sport coat (I prefer a dark color for evening, a neutral tone for day), a dress shirt and a pair of casual pants.
Either way, a tie is optional.
CASUAL: This look is the trickiest of all. It requires much taste and tact to appear classy, yet laid-back.
Option 1: An extremely clean, dark pair of trouser-style or five-pocket jeans with a sportshirt, with a pair of casual shoes or boots.
Option 2: A pair of solid or patterned pants with a sportshirt or knit top. Please stay away from printed T-shirts, tank tops, sweatpants, sneakers or anything you would wear lounging around the house. |
