Best Place Not to Order Pad Thai Holy Basil, 149 Second Ave. 2nd Floor (btw. 9th and 10th Sts.) 212-460-5557
Feel in-the-know as you climb up a flight of stairs to this somewhat hidden second floor creative Thai joint. From the outside it is unremarkable and blends into Second Avenue without making its mark. Inside, it feels like an upscale restaurant in the Thai rainforest. A mix between reserved constraint and exotic touches, the décor is a mix of the wild and dark, colorful and intimate. Wildflowers, candelabras, a reserved staff and wildly tasty food makes it the perfect place to get out of the Pad Thai box and try something spicy and new. This place is just sexy.
Best Place to Use Wet Naps Daisy May’s BBQ 623 11th Ave. (46th St.) 212-977-1500
This is the stuff of cravings. Daisy May’s may make you do crazy things just for a taste; like trek to 46th Street and 11th. Ave. for a Texas Chopped Beef Brisket Sandwich with pickles & onions or some Kansas City sweet & sticky pork ribs. For sides, stay away from the bourbon peaches and opt for the smoky ‘baked beans with burnt ends’, slightly sweet and cheesy ‘rustic creamy corn with New York State Cheddar.’ The Tennessee Whiskey Beer Can Style Half Chicken with two sides ($13) is enough to feed two, (or one Debonair editor), and is a personal favorite. Although fits of BBQ insanity have caused me to make the pilgrimage, it’s reassuring to know they deliver anywhere in Manhattan.
