A leather jacket is all about cool – rock stars, test pilots, robot assassins from the future, they all wore leather and you should too. Make no mistake though, a leather jacket is a pricey addition to any wardrobe and you should be a discerning buyer to make sure you get exactly what you want. The good news is a leather jacket will last for years and it`s easy to adapt to your look.
A few things to think about before you hit the stores – it`s difficult if not impossible to tailor leather, so make sure you find the fit you need off the rack. Almost every designer and major fashion label makes leather jackets because they are such a classic item, so think about the brands you already like to wear and start with those.
Also realize that the look and feel of leather is all about the animal it`s made from and feel isn't an indicator of quality. Lambskin and goatskin have a rich, supple feel to them while calf skin and cow hide will have a thicker, more rugged texture; one isn`t necessarily better than the other, it`s just different, so try on a range to figure out which is best for you. You can also look at more exotic choices like crocodile, ostrich, sting ray, and others, but it`s not something we really recommend. Even if you`re a robot assassin, it`s tough to pull off and costs a fortune.
